The Norfolk Island community warmly welcomes visitors to witness and take part in our National Day being Anniversary (Bounty) Day
Holiday Package Inclusions
On the 8th June 1856, the Morayshire arrived on Norfolk where they were met by the Commissariat Storekeeper and his wife. This day became ‘Anniversary Day’ also known as ‘Bounty Day’ and it is celebrated every year by the Norfolk Island community.
Norfolk Island's National Day is always a highlight for visitors, who are welcome to take part and absorb the ‘Norf’k’ culture, embodied through the local language (a mix of Tahitian, Creole and old English), food, crafts and customs.
Bounty Day Celebrations 2022
The unpopulated Pitcairn Island was chosen as a refuge by the sailors of the infamous 'Mutiny on the Bounty’. Under their leader, Fletcher Christian, the Mutineers began a new life on isolated Pitcairn, along with a contingent of Tahitian peoples – including the celebrated 'Fore-mothers'.
These inhabitants were later joined by a number of Whalers, who then integrated with the community. After outgrowing tiny Pitcairn, these eight family groupings relocated to Norfolk Island – where many of their descendants still live today.
Bounty Day Lunch - Optional Extra
Optional Bounty Day Picnic Lunch after the Re-enactment including transfers and entertainment $150 per person. Bookings essential to avoid missing out.
You will be picked up in the morning to watch the Pitcairn descendants reenact the landing of their forebears at the Kingston Pier – one of the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Afterwards follow this joyful procession of 'Norf'k Sullun', who will be dressed in their traditional 19th century costume, to the Cenotaph – where local hymns are sung and respects paid to fallen heroes.
Then it is on to the Cemetery for the laying of wreaths and singing of the Pitcairn Anthem (Norfolk’s National Anthem). The Pitcairn descendants will then make their way to the All Saints Church for the judging of the 'best-dressed family'.
Observe the tradition of the children rolling down Government House hill, then enjoy morning tea, followed by an Island picnic lunch – commenced by the traditional singing of 'Norf'k Grace'. Sample some sumptuous ‘wetles’, with complimentary red/white wine, orange juice, tea and coffee.
