Norfolk Island Wa’a Outrigger Club has come to the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Norfolk Ocean Challenge. The committee has made this decision after taking into consideration all factors involved with the impact of the Covid19 pandemic, the continuing uncertainty around travel restrictions, the recent release of restricted flights into Norfolk Island, and the impact COVID restrictions will have on running the event with volunteer support. The Club invites paddlers to join them for NOC the Rock in January 2022 for great paddling, competition and socialising fun.
Holiday Package Inclusions
2022 event dates have been set for 19-22 January, spaces are limited & crews have started registering already – get in quick to reserve your place.
The Norfolk Ocean Challenge combines competition, socialising, fun and holidaying all in one incredible week.
The first V6 race is the 26km Round the Rock Island Marathon. This main event is the highlight and sends the Island abuzz! The race sees paddlers journey around the whole Island, including through an 8m wide naturally formed basalt rock arch and past rugged coastline on a course like no other.
The second V6 race is the 12km Iron, a breathtaking journey that will either be to Phillip Island and back or around out-lying islands off Cascade Bay. Both courses are challenging, rewarding and exciting for all competitors. The week ends with V6 and V1 Sprints through the glistening clear waters of Emily Bay.
“The course was the best I have ever paddled in my life” – Pam Prescott, AOCRA Secretary
Important Crew information: AOCRA have advised that a crew of 6 to 9 names can be registered as competitors, so crews can be mixed up a little and will also have reserves.
IMPORTANT: To qualify for race entry, paddlers must book through event sponsor Norfolk Island Travel Centre and stay at one of the sponsor properties. If paddlers book their own flights and accommodation they will not be permitted to enter the race. These conditions of entry are in line with the sponsorship agreements NIWOC holds with their sponsors, all of whom paid over $10,000 to enable the purchase and import of the canoes.

Norfolk Island Travel Centre would like to advise that our booking conditions have been reconsidered for those travelling as part of the Norfolk Ocean Challenge event in light of the current worldwide COVID19 pandemic. Normally your $200 deposit is non-refundable, however if prior to final payment date of 22 September 2020 you are prevented from travelling due to either a COVID travel ban or event cancellation due to COVID your $200 deposit can be applied to the next year’s event or will be refunded. Please note cancellations for any other reason will incur our standard booking conditions and cancellation policy.
Full payment is due prior to 22 September 2020. Our package prices are based on bulk purchase airfares with Air New Zealand. These fares have conditions that include final payment being completed no later than 90 days before travel. Airfare is subject to change up until time of ticketing and is non-refundable after issue. Changes are permitted until day before departure however date/route changes can only be made within 7 days travel dates either side of your original booked travel dates. Amendments, upgrades and name changes are NOT permitted within 24 hours prior to departure. Payment of a change fee (per passenger) applies plus any applicable upgrade fees to cover the difference between the original fare and the new fare. Accommodation cancellation penalties apply within 90 days prior to travel. Within 60 days of travel, up to 100% cancellation fees may apply. We strongly recommend travel insurance to protect you in some instances for unforeseen cancellation.
Cancellation after final payment and ticketing as a result of Covid19
After final payment, and in the event of a lockdown of the Island or border closure from your destination it is unknown how Air New Zealand will handle issued tickets, however it is likely they will do as they have for other affected Covid19 bookings to date and hold your tickets over as a credit for next year’s Norfolk Ocean Challenge event only. Please note Air New Zealand will not provide a refund. Similarly, we would expect accommodation and car hire partners to respond in the same way by holding your bookings as a credit to be used next year. Usually, accommodation cancellation penalties apply within 90 days prior to travel and within 60 days of travel, up to 100% cancellation fees may apply.
Prices shown are in Australian dollars unless otherwise stated (New Zealand prices indicated by NZ$ prefix). Prices are valid for payment by personal or bank cheques or by direct deposit into Norfolk Island Travel Centre client trust account.
