Holiday Package Inclusions
Join Margaret Christian local Norfolk Island bird expert and author of Norfolk Birds, together with Norfolk Island National Parks staff for a wonderful week focusing on the birds of Norfolk Island.
During Norfolk Island Bird week 2019 we will be aiming to undertake a census of some of Norfolk’s endangered bird species and also an attempt to locate the white breasted white eye, no confirmed sightings of which have been made in 20 years. We invite those attending Bird week to be involved in these important science projects.
The Norfolk Island Group is a globally important biodiversity hotspot and has been designated as an ‘Important Bird Area’ by Birdlife International. The group is a breeding site for several 100,000 seabirds including the masked booby, grey ternlet, white tern, sooty tern, & wedge-tailed shearwater. Phillip Island supports one of the largest breeding populations of red-tailed tropic birds in Australia.
Norfolk itself is home to the endemic & endangered Norfolk Island Green Parakeet, & other endemic birds such as the Norfolk Island golden whistler & Norfolk Island scarlet robin.
The various birdwatching sessions throughout Bird Week will be scheduled (and repeated if necessary) to ensure there is no more than 15 birdwatchers at any one time per Guide.
Sessions through the week include 'Discover the world of Norfolk Island's unique and endemic bird fauna' with Margaret Christian; Norfolk birds by night; a presentation on endangered Norfolk Island Green Parrot; and guided birding tours of rainforest and seabird breeding colonies.
