Join experienced guides Neil and Michael Hermes on a personalised journey through Norfolk Island’s history, amazing wildlife and stunning scenery drawing on the knowledge and memories from Neil’s time as a Norfolk Island National Parks Officer and Michael’s background as an archaeologist working in places such as the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Queensland.
Neil, a zoology graduate from ANU, is an ornithologist who lived for three years on Norfolk Island as the Australian Government Conservation Officer. He had a big part to play in establishing the Norfolk Island National Park. In the 1980s with the Lions Club, he set up a project that saved the Norfolk Island Green Parrot by taking it into captivity when there were less than 20 living birds. He led a team that removed rabbits from Phillip Island. While living on the island he wrote “Birds of Norfolk Island” and wrote regular wildlife columns for local papers. Neil escorts tours around Australia and New Guinea.
Michael is an archaeologist and educator with a diverse range of work experience across the country. He has taught in Arnhem Land, lectured in Archaeology at the Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Education and consulted on cultural heritage matters for BHP, Origin Energy and in many other contexts. Initially studying at the ANU in Canberra, he worked for a time at the Northern Territory Museum and in the Heritage Branch, Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service. He is a Guest Lecturer [history, anthropology and archaeology] for Coral Expeditions on their cruises in Queensland, Tasmania and on the Kimberley/Northern Territory coast.
Between them Neil and Michael have a wealth of knowledge on the history and natural history of Norfolk Island.
