About Marilyn Andrews
I have been a full time professional artist for almost 20 years, working from my home studio and gallery beside the Brook Stream and more recently operating and working from my pop-up gallery Art in The City, Nelson. I enjoy the vibrancy of colour, and painting is a wonderful excuse to play with shapes, colours and textures on the canvas surface. It's the juxtaposition and resonance of colour that I really enjoy... light and vibration.
Gabriele Munter, Monet, Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, Doris Lusk and Toss Woollaston have all influenced my work. Each artist has taken me through experimental paths of exploration.
In 1993 I graduated from Nelson Institute of Technology with a Certificate in Art and Design and Diploma in Visual Arts, majoring in sculpture and jewellery. I have been finalist in the New Zealand Wearable Art Awards, multiple finalist in the Telecom Artawards, winner of the Yellow Pages Arts Scholarship in 2003, and have had work selected for exhibitions nationally. In Oct 2006 I was published in “Favourite New Zealand Artists” with 59 other artists and featured in “New Zealand – A Painted Country” (Nov 2007) and “Artists Impressions of New Zealand” (2011). In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 I was selected for the National Fibre Awards Exhibition. Recently my landscape images were chosen for wine labels destined for Japan.
I have outlets around New Zealand, exhibited for a time at Eclipse Gallery in Hitchin, England and ‘Gallery at The Wentworth’ in Sydney and Udara Art Studio in Melaka, Malaysia. I have work in collections world - wide. Travel to Greece, Spain, England, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia and around New Zealand, has inspired my landscape painting. I am influenced by different cultures and the effect humans have on the landscape and environment, sometimes avoiding any reference to human habitation and looking for nature in its purist sense, other times enjoying the interaction.
Recently I have enjoyed going back to process work, experimenting with colour layering, printing in a rustic way and constructing using individual elements. These episodes of play have resulted in the shield and cloak works which talk about the protection of species and living things on this planet.
My commissioned works cover a wide range of styles.
