About Pamela Pretty
Pamela has been drawing and painting from an early age and was influenced by both parents who were keen watercolourists. Most of her early work was in this medium and this was followed by an extensive career in Acrylic Painting spanning 20 years which involved teaching and designing in studios in Melbourne. Pamela had many published articles in National art publications during this time and won numerous awards including first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show. In 2004 Pamela began painting in soft pastel and instantly forged a connection with this medium. This proved to be a turning point and resulted in a very exciting time of growth.
Pamela was tutored in soft pastel by Walter Magilton who encouraged her to have an exhibition and to enter shows. This proved to be successful with a “best pastel” win in the first show entered (Frankston High School Art Show) and a successful joint exhibition with Jan Lowe held in 2008 at AGRA. Pamela has also received first prize in the Members Encouragement awards- General in her first 2 years as a member of the Pastel Society of Victoria then won the Advanced Pastellists award the following year 2008 and the Professional level in 2010. Pamela has won many awards in the ensuing years for her pastels including the Winter AGRA seasonal exhibition in 2013, the PSVA Best in Show in the same year and the award for the Best Pastel at the Camberwell Rotary Art Show in 2014.
She also won International recognition in 2013 by having two of her paintings published in the Pastel 100. These works both received Honorable Mentions in the Landscape/Interior section of the competition.
Teaching in all media has been an important part of Pamela’s work with regular classes taught at Victorian Artist Society, Blanc Canvas Studio at Hampton and Box Hill Community Art Centre.
Current classes are taught at the Ringwood Art Society Studio at the Federation Estate where Pamela teaches watercolour and pastel. Travel teaching, demonstrating running workshops and judging art shows are also regular activities.
A landscape and seascape specialist she is also a prolific wildlife and animal and portrait painter and is a member of the Pastel Society of Victoria Australia, The Australian Guild of Realist Artists and the Victorian Artists society and the Ringwood Artists Society. Other tutors Pamela has studied with in her Pastel development include Regina Hona, Grace Paleg, Raelene Sharp and Barbara Mc Manus. She is an active member of the Pastel Society of Victoria Australia and served as librarian for several years. She has served as a Councillor of AGRA for several Years and actively exhibits and participated in Victorian Artist’s Society, particularly in the plein air painting group.
Pamela has been an Artist in Residence at St Vincents Hospital from April 2011 to April 2012 and has several works in their Collection.
A feature article highlighting Pamela’s work and giving an example of her painting methods was published in Artists Palette magazine in February 2017.
Pamela exhibits her work at the Five Ways Gallery in Kalorama as well as the AGRA Galleries in Camberwell. Her paintings are prominently displayed at several businesses including the Doctors Surgery at Vermont Health Care.
