Sunday 25 April 2027 Lest We Forget
The Dawn Service on Norfolk Island holds a unique significance as one of the first ANZAC Day commemorations to take place each year in Australia, owing to the island's easterly location. Held on the shores of Emily Bay as the sun rises over the lagoon, the service offers a poignant and intimate setting for remembrance. The gentle lapping of waves and the silhouette of the island's own Lone Pine in the distance create a powerful atmosphere for reflection on the sacrifices made by service men and women, including the many Norfolk Islanders who have served in various conflicts. A Gunfire breakfast for veterans only will follow the service. Breakfast for Non Veterans will be at Government House
Mid-morning veterans and family representatives assemble at the Officer’s Bath in Quality Row to commence the march to the Cenotaph for the mid-morning service. A traditional ANZAC Day lunch is held at Norfolk Island RSL followed by a game of 2up.
Monday 26 April 2027
Come along on a tour which explains how the idyllic characteristics of Norfolk Island have been challenged and changed by the events of World War II. Your guide will explain the social impact when the major male component of the community joined the fighting forces and departed the island's shores for the duration of the war years. Have explained the equal impact of defence troops being posted to the island. Hear about the wartime construction of the Norfolk Island airport, the destruction of a mile long avenue of mature island pines and the loss of island homes, all to make way for the airport project. Tour some sites of the war machinery. Hear about equipment emplacements, radar stations, tented accommodation for troops and water supply facilities.
Followed by tour, there will be a picnic lunch provided at Emily Bay (weather dependant).
This evening, Governor’s lodge will host a buffet dinner for all guests.
