Event Details

Rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, Norfolk Island is a truly special place to paint and sketch. During this immersive workshop, explore the island’s stunning landscapes, historic buildings, 200-year-old fig trees, and unique local wildlife—including the iconic cows that have right of way on the roads.

This is primarily an en plein air workshop, ideal for those looking to develop their on-location painting or travel sketching skills. Explore both approaches, focusing on watercolour techniques, sketchbook layout design, and how to visually tell the story of your journey.

Whether you're an experienced watercolourist or a beginner excited to try something new, this workshop provides a supportive and inspiring environment to grow your artistic practice.

Cheryl Bruce

Working primarily in watercolour, this NSW Central Coast artist specialises in loose and impressionistic paintings covering a wide variety of subject matter from still life, to seascape, landscape, boats, horses and portraits.

Partners & Friends who do not wish to participate in the painting workshop are very welcome to come along; there is plenty to do on beautiful Norfolk Island whilst painters are out in the field. Non-painters packs include Island Life Tour, Welcome Dinner, Island Fish Fry, Pitcairn Settlers Village Tour plus Cyclorama entry.

Cheryl takes inspiration from the environment around her which she finds the Central Coast provides in abundance. She has also travelled extensively, painting and sketching en plein air regularly, working quickly to impart the feeling of the subject rather than depicting every detail.

Cheryl's gift for sharing techniques in a myriad of artforms and materials, makes her a popular mentor and tutor in Australia and internationally.

During the workshop you will be learning a variety of techniques while painting with Cheryl in a local studio setting for some sessions as well as painting and sketching en plein air. We will cover a diverse range of subject matter along with painting the local scenery. An en plein air kit including a folding seat, board, water bottle
& water well will be provided.

Upon arrival on Norfolk Island, be transferred to Ocean Breeze Cottages, your home for the next seven nights. Your hire car will be waiting at your accommodation, giving you time to head into Burnt Pine to pick up any groceries you may need for the week. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner at Hilli Restaurant. The word “hilli” comes from the unique Norf’k language and describes a drowsy, relaxed feeling—one you’ll surely experience after enjoying delicious local flavours and good company.

This morning, join Cheryl for your first art workshop.

This afternoon make your way to Governor’s Lodge Hotel for a delicious lunch at the Boatshed Restaurant prior to boarding a coach for the Island Life Tour. Spend the afternoon touring Norfolk Island, gaining a true insight into the intricate nature of modern island life. Your guide will share the latest information on the island's ethnic groups, nationalities and languages spoken, including the Norfolk Island indigenous language. Afternoon tea is included.

The evening is at leisure. You may wish to dine at one of the many local restaurants or ask us about booking the optional Progressive Dinner to Island Homes (additional cost).

Continue your en plein air workshop with Cheryl at a new scenic spot.
In the afternoon, visit Pitcairn Settlers Village to explore Norfolk’s more recent settlement history. Tour the original Bailey homestead and gardens, historic outbuildings, and a museum housing nostalgic and historic artefacts, including the Pacific’s oldest working forge. Enjoy complimentary refreshments and a short film on Norfolk Island’s heritage. Afterward, continue your workshop in the village gardens.

Evening at leisure. Ask us about the optional Ghost Tour Dinner & Lantern Walk (additional cost).
