Winter on stunning Norfolk Island

Located approximately 1600km east of Byron Bay, Norfolk Island enjoys a sub-tropical climate year-round – many locals are still swimming and enjoying the glorious beaches that Norfolk has to offer, while other parts of Australia have had their winter woollies out for weeks.

For those not as enthusiastic to dunk their toes in the beautiful waters of Emily Bay that may be bit winter-crisp, why not curl up in front of the fire at one of Norfolk’s cosy restaurants or cafes and enjoy a warm beverage or meal made from local fresh produce.  From the exquisite Duck confit or Turkish Zucchini at The Homestead restaurant, to a delicious Chicken Parmi at the Norfolk Island Bowls Club, there are dining options for all budgets and tastes.

Alternatively, visit one of Norfolk Island’s many National Parks and enjoy the pristine environment while walking the different trails – Norfolk Island is home to many endemic species of bird, including the endangered Green Parrot and cheeky Pacific Robin.  Pick up a walking trail map from the National Parks Head Office.

The Island is also on the migratory path of many different species of whale.  See if you can spot these majestic creatures from numerous vantage points around the island while enjoying a glass of wine and nibbles from one of the many cottage businesses dotted around the island (marinated local goats cheese or homemade preserves anyone!)

Norfolk Island’s untouched beauty and spectacular sunsets mean it is a mecca for photography enthusiasts, with different groups visiting the Island each year.  Winter is particularly fabulous for photography, with the clear blue skies and vivid green of the grass and trees providing a pleasing contrast to the subject being photographed, whether it be one of the world-heritage listed Georgian buildings in Kingston, a new-born calf and its mother at Anson Bay or a stunning sunset at Puppies Point… the opportunities are endless.

Night photography is also a drawcard for those wishing to visit Norfolk Island – the Island is a dark-sky sanctuary, so rug up, watch the stars and see how many constellations you can pick out… there is nothing like it anywhere else.
